Many people fear that registering in Poland may prevent them from taking advantage of the tax relief upon returning to their home country. But this is not true.
Registration is just an administrative formality
Registering in Poland is an administrative formality, not proof of residence for tax purposes. It does not prevent you from benefiting from the tax relief on your return, as this relief applies to your actual place of residence and tax residency.
What counts is the actual place of residence
According to the 2025 interpretation of the Director of the National Tax Information, even a person who was registered in Poland for the entire period of their stay abroad can benefit from the tax relief upon return. This means that registration in Poland does not determine the place of residence for tax purposes and does not exclude the right to the tax relief.
What does this mean in practice?
In practice, registering in Poland does not affect your right to the relief if you meet all the other conditions.
