Moving to Poland? Remember about the tax relief on your return.

Author: Krzysztof Burzyński

More and more people are deciding to return to Poland after years of working and living abroad. It's worth noting that such a move can offer not only new career opportunities but also tax benefits. One of the most important solutions available to those returning is the so-called return tax relief.

Who can benefit from the return relief?

To benefit from this privilege, several conditions must be met:

  • first – you should start settling taxes in Poland,
  • Secondly – you must prove that you have lived abroad for the last three years, settled taxes there and can document it, e.g. with a foreign tax residence certificate,
  • thirdly – you must be a citizen of Poland, another European Union country, the European Economic Area, as well as Switzerland, the USA, Japan, Great Britain or Canada.

Meeting these requirements opens the way to a very favorable tax solution.

What is the return relief?

The return tax relief provides an opportunity to benefit from personal income tax exemption. The exemption covers income earned from full-time employment, contracts of mandate, and running a business – up to PLN 85,528 per year.

Importantly, this privilege is valid for four consecutive years. This means that each year, taxpayers can benefit from the exemption for income exceeding PLN 85. This solution can, in practice, generate significant savings.

Summary

The return tax relief is a tool designed to encourage people to return to Poland and facilitate the resumption of professional activity in the country. Meeting the conditions for this tax relief can provide real financial support for many people. The Ministry of Finance has prepared a short guide on the rules for using the return tax relief, available at the following link: Relief for returning.
