Lump sum or scale – what is more profitable?

Author: Krzysztof Burzyński

Choosing a taxation method is one of the first and most important decisions an entrepreneur must make. The right decision affects not only the tax rate but also the possibility of taking advantage of tax relief and settling costs. Both the tax scale and the flat-rate tax have their advantages and limitations, so it's worth analyzing them in the context of your own business situation.

Tax scale – a safer choice to start with

For people just starting a business who are unable to predict their income level or whether they will find buyers for their goods and services, a tax scale is a safer solution.

This form of taxation allows:

  • settlement of costs of obtaining revenues,
  • using the tax-free amount of PLN 30,
  • application of a relatively low tax rate – 12% up to PLN 120 of income,
  • the possibility of settling taxes jointly with your spouse,
  • taking advantage of selected discounts, e.g. child tax relief.

However, it should be remembered that in the case of the tax scale there is also a health insurance contribution of 9%.

Lump sum – beneficial for high income and low costs

If an entrepreneur already runs a business, e.g. a service business, and achieves high earnings with low costs, a flat-rate tax may be a better solution.

In this model:

  • flat rates for most services range from 8,5% to 15%,
  • the health insurance contribution is fixed and does not exceed PLN 1400 per month,
  • there is no possibility of settling costs, but lower tax rates in many cases compensate for this inconvenience.

Practice shows that the lump sum is often chosen by people with high incomes and a lower cost structure.

Summary

There's no single, universal answer to the question of which taxation method is better—flat rate or tax scale. Much depends on the stage of business, income level, cost level, and individual needs of the entrepreneur. Proper analysis allows you to choose a solution that is not only cost-effective but also tailored to the specific needs of your business.
